Even a Little Data Will Do

Reading time: < 1 minutes

I’m motivated by the little ways data can make a very human impact. We always champion predictive modeling as a way your data can help your students, but there are a lot of very helpful stops along the way to a full-blown predictive model. This is part 2 of our blog series on Student Success initiatives. What’s more, this is an example of an initiative that has its roots in proactive, informed counseling, but uses finances as the motivator to bring students to the table. This is part 2 of our blog series on Student Success initiatives.

Here are the initiatives the Cleveland State University has introduced to keep its students on track. Taking a look at the report published on US News & World Report’s website, it becomes immediately clear that full time enrollment must have something to do with completion likelihood. We see this anecdotally as well. In fact, taking a lighter course load (i.e. less than a full course load) in your first semester even has an impact as immediately as your likelihood of year to year retention.

That’s why I’m so excited to hear about initiatives like the ones CSU introduced. Even if their process wasn’t directly inspired by a particular report, this is the epitome of how helping students helps the university, and how that can be accomplished just by listening to what the data has to say.

How do you use your data- big or small?
