Meeting Students’ Basic Needs: How to Practice Equity in Student Success

Webinar Title:
Meeting Students’ Basic Needs:

How to Practice Equity in Student Success

Duration:
50 minutes

For every college student losing sleep over their next exam, another one is worried about where they’re going to sleep, or where their next meal will come from.

According to a survey of more than 43,000 students across the US, upwards of half of them experience some form of food and housing insecurity while they pursue a degree. Homelessness affects about 1 in 10 students nationally.

One institution, Bunker Hill Community College, in Boston, MA, has taken these troubling data to heart and begun evaluating the prevalence of food and housing insecurity on its campus. Research by BHCC research associates Marilyn Roth and Amy Boudreau has expanded what it means to “ensure student success” by supporting students more holistically.

In this on-demand video, you’ll learn:

  • How BHCC identifies and carefully provides for students with basic needs
  • The impact their efforts have had on keeping these students enrolled
  • Techniques for data collection and evaluation to bring to your own campus community
  • And other “symptoms” affecting students’ lives that command our attention

With Roth, Boudreau, and Rapid Insight senior data analyst Jon MacMillan, explore how to build more equity and compassion into your student success strategy.
